Extinguisher ( () (もの) Kesu Mono?) is the twenty-third chapter of Ayashimon.

Summary[]

Tamagawa faces Maruo in the form of Doppo and uses the Ayashimon's powers against him. However, as a result of his training with Ozunu, Maruo becomes able to overcome Doppo's freezing flames by using his new power to punch through fire and gains the upper hand against Tamagawa. Not willing to let down Gyobu-Danuki, Tamagawa assumes Doppo's true form at the cost of losing himself to his transformation and uses his powers to put down Maruo.

Plot Details[]

Recalling Tamagawa's past brutally, while serving in the Enma Syndicate, where he mercilessly tortured two men, Kotton warns Urara that Tamagawa is the type of person who looks into the background of others in order to exploit their weaknesses. Urara then warns Maruo that he is not facing the real Doppo and that it is Tamagawa transformed. After Ten questions how Tamagawa managed to know that Maruo had met Doppo, Kotton answers that Tamagawa has his secretary, who successfully escapes being captive by the Todoroki Alliance, to thank for this given the hotels multiple connections around Kabukicho. Kotton also tells Urara that the transformation Tamagawa has taken is more than just a fake.

At the lobby, the ritual duel commences with Tamagawa attacking Maruo with Doppo's flames. As this is happening, Kotton informs Urara and Ten that Tamagawa is using a forbidden tanuki technique called Conceptual Transformation where he is copying Doppo's appearance but also his every aspect, including his abilities. To not damage the building, as well as to not stay in his transformation for too long, Tamagawa plots to put an end to the battle quickly by freezing Maruo. After getting back up, Maruo gives Tamagawa a smile and thanks him for taking on Doppo's form since he believes that this battle will make for good practice for when he faces the real Doppo Akari. Tamagawa then becomes irritated by this statement and proceeds to attack Maruo with Doppo's flames once more. Remembering Ozunu's lesson about how he needed to deny the concept of flames in order to destroy it, Maruo uses his fists to punch right through the flames as he did the first time and lands a hit on Tamagawa, much to his happiness that his training with Ozunu paid off.

After feeling the effects of the transformation, Tamagawa is called out by Inari to release his form since he will run the risk of losing his sense of self if he stays in it for too long. Tamagawa becomes conflicted with deciding his next course of action since releasing his form may result in Kori Hotel coming into ruin. He then looks up at the Kori Hotel sign and remembers Gyobu-Danuki's past promise to create a home for his comrades. Having had this memory, Tamagawa ignores the risks for Gyobu-Danuki's sake and puts on Doppo's mask to enter his true form, much to Urara's and Inari's shock. After doing so, the Doppo clone releases a torrent of dark liquid from his palm to engulf Maruo, lets him know that Ayashimon are mere concepts created by humans turned real, using the hitorima race as an example, and tells him that he will ensure that he fears him once again. Maruo then falls to the ground from the effects of the dark liquid by soaked on him, which also causes Urara to feel the effects as well from her telepathy.
